What You’ll Learn

Throughout this course, you will develop a strong understanding of:

  • The different types and forms of medication

  •  Various modes of medication administration

  • The characteristics of commonly used medications, including prescribed and over-the-counter medications

  • Assisting with medication using at least five different types and three different modes of administration

  • Correct medication documentation, including Incident Reports and Medication Administration Forms

Practical, Hands-On Training

You’ll engage in real-world practical scenarios, including:

  • Assisting with Medication for Asthma

  • Administering Medication for Anaphylaxis

  • Providing PRN Liquid Paracetamol

  • Using Eye Drops

  • Assisting with Oral Tablet Administration

Additionally, you’ll complete a theory assessment with multiple-choice and short-answer questions to reinforce your learning.

  • Course Duration Information:

    • Refresher Minimum Duration: 300 minutes

    • Blended Minimum Duration: N/A

    • Face-to-Face Minimum Duration: 480 minutes

    • Online with Face-to-Face Minimum Duration: 120 minutes

  • To be eligible for entry into the course offered by Allens Training Pty Ltd, an individual must demonstrate the following capabilities:

    1. Physical Capability: Candidates must possess the physical ability to meet the demands of practical demonstration skills. This includes handling equipment and performing necessary tasks effectively.

    2. Numeracy Skills: Applicants are required to have strong numeracy skills to accurately calculate and verify medication dosages, track expiry dates, and manage client information through basic calculations involving ratios and volume.

    3. Reading Skills: Proficient reading skills are essential for correctly checking and interpreting client information, as well as understanding dosage instructions to ensure safe medication management.

    4. Language Skills: Candidates must exhibit effective language skills to appropriately greet and converse with clients. This includes the ability to explain medication requirements clearly and to obtain informed consent from clients.

    5. Online Study Access: Students intending to undertake the online study options must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with reliable internet connectivity. This access is crucial

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

  • This certificate is valid indefinitely and does not require renewal.

  • Please note that enrolment to this course is made with Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909. Please refer to the student handbook located on the RTO website allenstraining.com.au (https://allenstraining.com.au/students/student-handbook) for all details relating to rights and responsibilities including complaints and appeals.

  • Practical scenarios: 

    • Scenario 1 – Provide assistance with medication – Asthma

    • Scenario 2 – Provide assistance with medication – Anaphylaxis

    • Scenario 3 – Provide assistance with medication – PRN Liquid Paracetamol

    • Scenario 4 – Provide assistance with medication – Eye Drops

    • Scenario 5 – Provide assistance with medication – Tablets

    Documentation - The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

    • Incident Report Forms

    • Medication Administration Forms

    Theory assessment -   A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

      • Remove the safety cap and firmly press the injector against the outer thigh.

      • Hold in place for a few seconds, then remove and massage the injection site.

    1. Call for Emergency Help: Dial emergency services if symptoms persist or worsen.

    Practical Scenarios for Medication Assistance

    Scenario 1 – Provide Assistance with Medication – Asthma

    In this scenario, a person experiencing an asthma attack may require assistance with their reliever medication (e.g., a puffer). Confirm the individual's identity and ask if they have their medication on hand. Observe the following steps:

    1. Check the Medication: Ensure the puffer is prescribed to the individual and is within its expiration date.

    2. Instruct the Individual: Guide the person to sit comfortably and, if necessary, assist them in removing the cap from the inhaler.

    3. Assist with Administration:

      • If using a spacer, attach it to the inhaler and place the mouthpiece at the person's lips.

      • Have them take a deep breath and then activate the inhaler, encouraging them to inhale slowly and deeply.

    4. Monitor Response: Observe for improvement in breathing or any adverse reactions.

    5. Document the Incident: Complete the Incident Report Form and the Medication Administration Form.

    Scenario 2 – Provide Assistance with Medication – Anaphylaxis

    In an anaphylactic reaction, immediate assistance and the administration of an adrenaline auto-injector (e.g., EpiPen) are critical. Follow these steps:

    1. Confirm the Emergency: Identify symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or rash. Confirm if the individual has a known allergy.

    2. Administer Adrenaline:

      • Locate the auto-injector.

      • Remove the safety cap and firmly press the injector against the outer thigh.

      • Hold in place for a few seconds, then remove and massage the injection site.

    3. Call for Emergency Help: Dial emergency services if symptoms persist or worsen.

We are flexible and recognise that appointments and life can sometimes get in the way, and you may need to transfer the course date. Whilst we do offer 1 free transfer per students there may be additional fees

Full refund.

Less than 10 days before the course - 75% refund.

After the course has started - No refund.

Transfers - Free transfer to another short course if dates are available.

Extenuating Circumstances - Full credit toward future courses may be offered.

Course Cancellation by Regional First Aid - Full refund or alternative arrangements if the course cannot be fulfilled.

We also do an administration fee of $25 depending on the circumstances
